Are there any side effects of an elemental diet?Updated a month ago
No serious or adverse events were reported by patients in our 2023 clinical trial. In general, while on an elemental diet some patients report some side effects of headache, diarrhea, or abdominal cramps, however it is often difficult to tell if this is a result of the elemental diet or the GI condition of which they suffer. The first few days on a liquid diet may loosen stool that has been stuck in the colon, causing some gas and discomfort - this is usually a temporary discomfort, but is an indication that the GI tract is experiencing the benefits of the elemental diet. It is also common to experience less frequent bowel movements while on the elemental diet. This may lead some to believe they are constipated - the diet itself does not cause constipation but it can slow down bowel function as the GI tract rests. This is natural and generally no cause for concern.
Side effects of bloating, nausea, or lightheadedness are often a direct result of drinking the shakes too quickly. We recommend sipping each serving over the course of at least 30 minutes, or as long as feels comfortable for your body.
In general, unless otherwise contraindicated by your HCP or your personal medical history, it is ok to manage headaches with an OTC like Tylenol, or manage heartburn/nausea with an OTC like Pepcid.
As always, follow up with your health care provider if you feel any discomfort.
