How does it work if there is sugar in it? Why is this so high in carbohydrates?Updated 10 months ago
The natural, unprocessed sugar in this formula, derived from organic maltodextrin and dextrose, is absorbed within the initial 2-4 feet of the small intestine. It does not travel far enough to feed the bacteria associated with SIBO. Elemental diets by their nature need to be 40-75% carbohydrates in the form of monosaccharides in order to provide adequate nutrients and support cellular energy production as they are serving as the patient’s sole source of nutrition. Elemental diets are not recommended for patients with blood sugar conditions or diabetes.
