Elemental diets have been studied as nutritional support in the preparation and postoperative periods of colectomies. Use of an elemental diet reduced the length of hospital stays and recovery to defecation in a randomized-controlled trial. That said, we always recommend checking with your health care provider before beginning the elemental diet.
